For Tyler Thompson, music is more than an interest; it’s been a calling for as long as he can remember. Growing up in San Bernardino, CA, Tyler found himself experimenting with sounds and music at a young age, plugging away at a toy piano he had stashed in his back yard that he’d use in lieu of playing sports. The practice on the piano inspired him, and at the age of 11, a career in music became his aspiration. When he turned 18, he decided to make that aspiration a reality, left San Bernardino and made his way around California, pursuing gigs and opportunities.
Primarily a keyboard/piano player, Thompson is also a competent guitarist and saxophonist and well-versed in rock, blues, pop and jazz. Playing professionally since 2005, his first break in the industry came as the co-founder and keyboard player alongside FOX Music Executive and LIT guitarist Ryan Gillmor of Gillmor, and as a member of the group was featured prominently on its 2006 album “Counting the Days.” As a member of the group, he was apart of the team that co-wrote the hit song “Hey!” for Mitchell Musso of “Hannah Montana” fame, and their song “In this Moment” was prominently featured on “American Idol” as part of the uber-popular show’s songwriter showcase.
After making his way around the California scene, Thompson opted for a change of pace, moving to upstate New York in 2013 and settling near the Adirondack Mountains. The people and culture change have inspired him, informing his newest solo project, WeareLight.
WeareLight is built around the concepts of meaningful melody and rhythms, a sound Thompson himself describes as “100 percent organic, raw, pure rhythm and groove.” Inspired by the universe and the harmonic convergence of the themes of darkness and light, Thompson imbues his music with deep emotion, urging listeners to follow him on his journey in musical transcendence.
